A group of quick-thinking shopkeepers and customers stopped a runaway car in Uckfield on Saturday (June 4) after it began drifting into traffic.

The drifting car was first spotted by Allsorts proprietor and Uckfield Town councillor James Anderson and another shopkeeper as it began drifting from Grange Road into High Street.

The shopkeepers were able to stop traffic on the road and hold the car in place with the help a customer and a passer-by.

The group were able to push the car back into while the customers’ seven-year-old son put sandbags from the nearby roadworks under the car’s rear wheels.

Allsorts proprietor and Uckfield Town Councillor James Anderson and Jo from Josifina were on hand on Saturday afternoon when a car started to runaway into the High Steet.

The police were called and the driver returned around an hour later.

It is believed a defective handbrake was the cause of the incident.
