Record-breaking tapestry
THE Quaker Tapestry, a tale of 350 years of social history, is on display at the Friends' Meeting House in central Brighton until February 27.
Created by 4,000 people in 15 countries, the tapestry is one of the world's largest community textile projects.
Spokesman Michael Barrett said: "The Quaker Tapestry celebrates social history from the 17th century, featuring, among others, George Stephenson, the Irish Potato Famine, the Slave Trade, the Crimean War, Tsar Nicholas I and Joseph Rowntree. Thirty-nine of the 77 embroidered panels will travel to Brighton from their permanent home at the Quaker Tapestry Centre at Kendal, Cumbria.
"A special feature of this year's Roadshow will be the display of a brand new panel created by Brighton Friends. Once the exhibition plans were confirmed, Bridget Guest travelled to Brighton to teach the stitches and techniques used to create the original tapestry. The new panel will be worked on by Brighton Friends during the exhibition.
"Each tapestry panel measures 25" (635mm) by 21" (533mm) and was created in the narrative crewel embroidery style of the Bayeux Tapestry. The tapestry was made by men, women and children aged between four and 90.
"Since its first public exhibition, the tapestry has travelled to 150 venues in the UK, Europe and America, attracting thousands of visitors to each venue. 11,500 people visited the 2009 exhibition at Southwell Minster."
Times: 10am–4.30pm Monday–Saturday (Closed Sunday); Admission: Free of charge to all visitors.
