Man charged after flats evacuated in chemical scare

A man has been charged after seven police officers came into contact with a suspected noxious substance.

Hamad Nejad was arrested on Thursday accused of one count of administering a poison with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and one count of intimidation of a witness.

The 34-year-old is alleged to have released a chemical substance during a routine arrest at a property in Elizabeth Jennings Way, Oxford.

Around 60 people were evacuated from a block of flats after the incident at 5.16am, and at around 9pm Thames Valley Police said they had been allowed back into their homes.

Two of the affected police officers were kept in hospital overnight.

In a separate incident, Nejad is alleged to have contacted a witness between July 26 and August 9.

Nejad, of Elizabeth Jennings Way, is due to appear at Oxford Magistrates' Court on Friday.
