Ostrich and kangaroo burgers will be just some of the products on offer at Newhaven’s new twice weekly street market, which will feature around 18 stalls.
The market will open on Saturday August 10 thanks to a £10,000 grant from the Mary Portas scheme and has been organised by Newhaven Chamber of Commerce.
It is hoped the market will help attract more people to the town centre and help revive the High Street, which has suffered from low numbers of shoppers and empty shop units during the recession.
Newhaven Chamber of Commerce president Annie Lorys said: “The market is great news for Newhaven – the Chamber feels very positive about it.
“We hope that very quickly this will help to bring more people into Newhaven town centre; begin to regenerate the High Street and put Newhaven back on the map.”
The Government’s Mary Portas scheme awarded funding to towns to help them improve their high streets.
Other goods to be on sale at the market will include pretzels, paella and tapas, as well as local art and crafts, fruit and veg.
The newly appointed market manager Gillian Smith has lived in Newhaven for 12 years and said her dream had been to see a lively and vibrant market in the High Street.
Gillian added: “Newhaven is such a great little town – it has so much character and has one of the best locations on the South Coast. When I carried out a survey at the Fish Festival all the local residents were telling me that they wanted a proper street market in Newhaven – so I hope they will all come along on August 10 and support the launch.”
There will also be entertainment at around midday from Studio Tempo’s line dancers.
Chamber secretary Paul Boswell added: “The 10th of August is going to be a big day – you name it, we’ve got it.
“I only ask that the residents of Newhaven turn out in force to show their support.”
There will be free parking on Saturday August 10 in the multi-storey car park in the town centre and in Bay Vue car park next to the Hillcrest Centre.
The High Street market will then run every Thursday and Saturday from 9am-2pm.
