Herstmonceux Primary School has been celebrating after being presented with the Sainsbury’s School Games Silver Award.
The government led award rewards schools for their commitment to and development of competition, school sport and physical education.
Herstmonceux is the first primary school in the South Downs to be awarded the higher level Silver Award, which staff say is an excellent achievement.
One of the aspects the award recognises the opportunities provided for children to participate in a range of competitive sports within the school and also in competitions with other schools. Herstmonceux competes in numerous School Games competitions including High 5 netball, football, cross country, swimming, cricket, Quadkids athletics, stoolball, rounders and gymnastics. Last year the Year 3/4 Tri-Golf team won the South Downs Area Tri-Golf competition and went through to the School Games Level 3 Finals at K2 Crawley. They also had runners who progressed through three rounds to be selected for the South Downs Area team at the Sussex School games finals.
A school spokesman said: “The school was also awarded the Silver Mark Award for the number of children taking part in extra-curricular clubs and for the established links it has with local sports clubs.
“In addition, Herstmonceux have their own school sports committee and play leader scheme where children organise and run sports activities in the school, including a Change for Life Club run at lunchtimes. Sabrina Simons, the school PE co-ordinator, has worked incredibly hard.”
