The annual New Year Dip organised by Seaford Lifeguards was cancelled this year due to the recent severe weather and as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives at sea.
The event was due to take place on Sunday January 5 and was to involve lifeguards as well as members of the public taking a dip in the icy waters to raise money.
It usually generates about £500 for the lifeguards and is one of its biggest fundraisers.
Seaford Lifeguards chairman Pete Gwilliam said: “Due to the severe weather conditions and as a mark of respect for those who have recently lost their lives in the sea, Seaford Lifeguards has cancelled its annual New Year Dip in the sea at Seaford Bay.
“The emergency services are trying very hard to discourage people from entering the surf during the very stormy conditions we are experiencing at the moment, it would therefore be remiss for us to allow the event to proceed.
“We are sorry to disappoint our supporters but are sure they will understand our reasons.”
The dip attracts about 150 supporters who come to cheer the participants on and donate money to the lifeguards. Money is also raised through sponsorship.
