Comedian Simon Evans is coming to Lewes for the third year running with his very special brand of wit for a charity gig to support the Railway Land project.

With an increasingly popular national fan base, Evans’s return to the county town on January 26 is once more likely to be a sell-out.

Project Director Dr John Parry said: “It was Simon who took the initiative and offered to do another year for us and we are thrilled that he enjoys trying out new material at the Linklater Pavilion which is such an intimate venue.

“His take on Shackleton last year was stunning and this year may include some outrageous links to the project!’

For Evans, the winter Linklater gig has “become a fixture in my calendar now, and is every bit as welcome as Christmas, New Year’s Eve and a dose of the flu. Nevertheless I’m committed now and something tells me that beneath John’s woolly exterior, there lies a core of steel.

“There must be to have got this thing – literally – off the ground in the first place. I’d be a fool to try to make off, like one of the Railway Land Reserve’s vegetables, and escape!”

That’s a reference to the wild food that flourishes on the site, such as horseradish, which found its way there after breaking loose from the old railway allotments.

Tickets will be available on the door but advance booking is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment.

They are priced at £13 (over-16s only) to include a glass of wine/soft drink and can be obtained from info@railwaylandproject.org (telephone 01273 487798), Lewes Mobile Communications, High Street; Harveys Shop in the Cliffe; or lEKO, St John’s Street. Doors open at 7pm and the gig starts at 7.30pm.

Hove-based Evans is an established act on the UK comedy circuit with a growing TV profile. His style has been characterised as sarcastic, cynical and quick-witted, and following a well-received return to the Edinburgh Festival in 2010 according to leading comedy review site Chortle “his sharp, acidic barbs remain a rich delight”.

He appears regularly on BBC Radio 4 – hosting and writing seven series of the spoof news show The Way It Is (as Richard Richard), as well as appearing on numerous panel games including The News Quiz, Armando Iannucci’s Charm Offensive and The Unbelievable Truth.
