YOU had to feel sorry for the organisers of Lewes Carnival.

Tuesday’s procession was disappointingly small and the event came in for some stinging attacks.

Posts on the Forum at www.lewes.co.uk described it variously as “embarrassing”, “woeful” and “dated”.

Hats off to those that made the effort - Skull Drummery, the Dance Academy, Oyster Project and Lewes, Glynde and Beddingham Brass Band.

Organisers the Rotary Club of Lewes Castle had moved the carnival date forward this year to coincide with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Frustrated Carnival Chairman Jerry Noble said it was disappointing so few local organisations had made the effort to take part in the procession - particularly as there were larger numbers on the streets to watch.

The miserable weather conditions had not helped either.

The showground at Malling had been a success, he said - until the heavens opened and 75 per cent of the visitors scurried for home.
