Uckfield 2s lost at home to a strong Eastbourne 2s side, although the result perhaps didn’t do their performance justice.
The game began with a lot of early pressure for Uckfield and a rash of penalties, culminating in the Eastbourne no 7 being yellow carded. Charlie Buckland missed the only goal kick attempted, and Ian Page Mitchell was held up over the line.
After twenty two minutes the pressure was rewarded and Page Mitchell went in from another short penalty and Buckland converted. This seemed to galvanize the visitors and they quickly scored a well-constructed backs try out wide, but missed the conversion. Eastbourne’s forwards then took control especially in the scrum and scored again under the posts. Some weak tackling from URFC then let in Eastbourne’s 15 for a try under the posts.
Eastbourne continued to apply pressure and Uckfield’s defence held out until the visitors finally scored wide from an overlap.
Half time 7-24.
Like the first, the second half started well for URFC, with a long sustained visits to the opposition’s 22, and eventually scored a good try from Max Currums, again from a tap penalty.
Eastbourne came back and were held up over the line, and then scored in the corner, but again missed the conversion. There followed a long period of Eastbourne dominance with some good defence from Uckfield. Toward the end Uckfield came back and Eastbourne suffered a red card for a high tackle and then a further yellow. Despite this they managed to score the final try after some solid work from their forwards....Final score ...12 -34
