IT WAS back to the 1940s at Newhaven Fort on Sunday as hundreds of people turned out to enjoy the sunshine at the Battle of Britain Commemoration.
Visitors enjoyed a wonderful day of 1940s musical entertainment from Seaford Silver Band, Haven Harmonies, Brighton Boogie dancers and the Swingtime Sweethearts.
The parade ground was full of military vehicles and a number of living history groups were present to add an extra touch of authenticity to the event.
Among the attractions was a reconstruction of an RAF station operations room in 1940, demonstrating how the plotting table would have been used during the Battle of Britain.
Fort Manager Simon Cochran said: “As usual, Battle of Britain Day has proved to be the best attended event of the year so far.
“We are delighted that the sun stayed out for us and that so many people were able to see the Fort at its best.
“Thanks have to go to the performers, re-enactors and volunteers who made it such a special day.”
Members of the Women’s Land Army also returned to soak up the atmosphere and reminisce about their wartime experiences.
