Storyteller at Worthing

THEATRE Akimbo will be celebrating the art of storytelling for the tenth annual National Storytelling Week at St Paul's Centre in Chapel Road, Worthing, on Saturday January 30.

Carol Hunter, from Tell Tales, is Theatre Akimbo's new in-house storyteller and will be peforning two short stories for children and two short stories for adults to kick off the national celebration.

Artistic director Glenda Harkess said: "The sharing of stories is an age-old tradition dating back centuries. The telling of stories is a skill handed down from generation to generation. Think of the stories you have heard around the tea-table from your own family elders.

Listening and sharing is important too, otherwise the stories would mean nothing.

"Storytelling is an age-old art not just for the young but for all ages. Since the beginning of time people have shared stories with each other through their experiences from ancient tribes to 20th century stand –up comedians. Stories empower, and feed our imagination – without our stories we are nobody! Stories are at the root of everything Theatre Akimbo produces – listening, telling and relaying other peoples stories."

Theatre Akimbo's Tell Tales will be at St Pauls on Saturday January 30. Starting with a morning session at 11.30am for children aged three upwards, all ages welcome but young children must be accompanied by an adult, and continuing at 1.30pm for an afternoon session with stories suitable for older children adults.

"The stories will all run on the themes of winter leading into spring with shorter pieces and longer tales originating from Navajo Indian legends about the sun, moon and stars and a traditional Middle Eastern story about a merchant, a journey and the wisdom of a beautiful bird. Audience participation is encouraged – especially when children are listening!

"Come and join in, come and listen, come and share. Entry is free, donations are welcomed, bring a cushion, relax and help your storyteller get to the happy ending!"
