Students from the Prince’s Trust course at Sussex Downs College in Newhaven have been helping to spruce up a local tourist attraction.
They worked at Newhaven Fort for several days decorating the grand magazine, painting railings and a tunnel and putting up information boards.
As part of their 12 week Prince’s Trust Team course, the students have to complete a community project, work experience and raise money for charity.
Newhaven Fort curator Philip Baldock said: “They have done a good job and it’s much appreciated.”
The students managed to source some of the materials for the project at a discount from Travis Perkins in Newhaven.
They also weeded a large area at the front of the fort.
A total of nine students spent seven days working at the fort, as well as two days planning and will spend a further two days fundraising.
As part of their course they will be doing a cake and bric a brac sale next week on February 27 and 28.
And they will take part in a sponsored walk from Newhaven to the Cuckmere River, where they will stage a rubber duck race, with prizes up for grabs.
All the money raised will go to Newhaven Fort.
The Prince’s Trust Course is for young people aged 16-25.
Prince’s Trust leader Phil Grant said: “It’s a real confidence boost for them.
“It helps them acquire skills and get back to work, or go back to education.”
The students will finish the Prince’s Trust Course in April.
The Prince’s Trust is the UK’s leading youth charity offering 16 to 25 year olds opportunities to develop confidence, learn new skills and get into work or start in business.
The course is a 12 week programme which helps young people to find work, get onto a training programme or get into college.
Students take part in interesting challenges such as a two week work placement. The course helps to identify students’ talents, help them look for work, training or a college course.
It will also assist students with writing a great CV and getting ready for an interview, learn new skills and get a qualification.
The Prince’s Trust team programme runs three times a year in September, January and May.
It runs at Newhaven, Eastbourne and Hastings.
