Police are still waiting to interview a 51-year-old man who suffered serious burns in a fire at the Hollywood Nails salon in High Street, Hailsham, on Wednesday afternoon (March 4)

Detective Chief Inspector Mark O’Brien, who is leading an investigation into the incident, said, “The man is in a critical condition and is still too ill to talk to us. He is expected to undergo surgery at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead later today (Friday).”

A 21-year-old woman and a baby under six months also suffered serious burns and are being treated at the Queen Victoria Hospital and Bristol Royal Infirmary respectively.

Both are said to be making good progress and the baby boy, whose condition had originally been a cause for concern, is now said to be stable.

DCI O’Brien said, “Work is still going on at the scene to establish what happened and I would expect this to continue throughout most of today. The one-way High Street is open to traffic but the salon is still cordoned off.

“I would like to apologise to anyone who has been inconvenienced by this necessity to preserve the scene, and thank them for their patience and support.

“We have spoken to several witnesses, but I would encourage anyone who may be able to assist us and who has not yet come forward to do so.

“All information is relevant to us at this stage, although I would emphasise that we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”

Any witnesses or others with information are asked to email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101, quoting Operation Arizona.

Alternatively they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
