Singer Mia Williams-Watson, 15, from Kingston near Lewes, wowed the crowd and judging panel at the Open Mic UK Regional Showcase, and she is now one step away from performing at The O2 in London.
Thousands of acts entered Open Mic UK 2013 and the best unsigned singers from across the country were chosen to perform at the live Regional Final shows.
Mia performed in front of a capacity audience and professional judging panel at Hove Town Hall. She is now set to perform at the Area Finals for the chance to progress to the National Grand Final within The O2 in London on January 18, where she would be fighting to win a £5,000 cash prize to spend on the development of her act.
Mia, who attends Brighton College, busks regularly in Lewes and is a firm favourite with the locals, many of whom are supporting her. In the past Mia has busked and raised money for local charities including the Chestnut Tree hospice, the RSPCA and Scotty’s Little Soldiers.
Mia said: “Performing this time in front of a panel of judges involved in the music business was so exciting. I sang a cover version of Clown by Emeli Sande. It was fantastic having a live audience and to hear the cheering from my family, school friends and local Lewes people. I want to thank them all - it makes such a difference having them there. The atmosphere was brilliant and everyone was so supportive.”
Mia Williams-Watson said: “From the competition so far I have already won a day in a recording studio and a singing lesson. It is all such a learning experience. I am putting all I can into it and I feel I am improving each time I sing. It is so good to get feedback from professionals and I can’t wait for the next round. If I get through I will be singing at the O2! “
A spokesperson for Open Mic UK said: “We are searching for an act that not only has the ability to impress an audience, industry judges and A&R associates, but an act that has the potential to become a professional recording artist. Acts that have made it are just one step away from performing at the best live music venue in the country.”
