Pubs and clubs across East and West Sussex will be joining forces during the month of March to raise funds for Sussex Hospices.

Last year’s Mad March Pub Quizzes and raffles were held at over 100 pubs across Sussex, and this year looks set to beat that number - as 58 are signed up already. They include the Rainbow, (Cooksbridge;) John Harvey Tavern and Black Horse, (Lewes;) The Blacksmiths Arms (Offham;) The Abergavenny Arms, (Rodmell) and The Bell, (Ticehurst.)

Mad March Pub Quizzes are backed by TV personality Al Murray, The Pub Landlord, who said: “I think the Mad March Pub Quiz Challenge is a Top Notch idea and I urge you to support it in whatever way you can to raise money for Sussex hospices.” People are being encouraged to ask their locals to join the challenge, if they haven’t already.

Funds raised can either go to Friends of Sussex Hospices for distribution, or direct to any Sussex hospice. Benefits to pubs taking part include getting more customers on quiz nights and potentially onwards into the future as well as a closer relationship with the communities they serve.

Last year’s challenge was supported by 100 pubs and raised £10,000.

Organisers will supply posters, flyers and Sussex-wide promotion to help landlords publicise their pub quiz and will award a certificate to pubs taking part afterwards.

The scheme is the brainchild of Kathy Gore, from Framfield.

The Friends started life as Friends of East Sussex Hospices, but the idea was so inspirational, it soon expanded to take in the west side of the county.

Kathy pointed out that last year, lots of people travelled right across the county to take part in quizzes - she expects they’ll notch up many more miles in 2015.

She has many more fundraising ideas up her sleeve including ladies’ luncheons with guest speakers and the Hymnathon - a marathon hymn singing day in June which is open to choirs and visitors.

She said: “We welcome choirs from across Sussex to sing for half-an-hour in a 30 hour marathon of hymn singing. Everyone is welcome to join the congregation at any time during the event or take part in one of the glorious Messiah choruses sung at intervals.”

The Hymnathon takes place at Lancing College Chapel from 9.30am until 3.30pm.
