Jewellery worth more than £3,000 was stolen in a burglary in Hankham, near Pevensey, on Friday (August 7).
An alarm at a house in Cottage Lane was triggered at around 12.30pm.
Two people working nearby heard the alarm, but did not think anyone had actually entered the property.
The homeowner returned to find several items of jewellery had been taken including pendants, rings, necklaces and bracelets, plus an amount of cash.
On the same day an unsuccessful attempt was made to break into a neighbouring property in Cottage Lane, causing damage to patio doors.
Detective Constable Richie Davidson, of Sussex Police, said: “We believe the two incidents may be linked.
“We would like to hear from anyone who may recall any suspicious behaviour during the time frame given.
“In particular, we’d like to talk to anyone who may have seen a dirty blue Mercedes-Benz car in the area.”
He added: “Many of the items of jewellery stolen are quite distinctive, so I’d also like to hear from anyone who thinks they may have seen them for sale.”
