MEMORABLE life experiences were recalled by a father to his family and friends when he celebrated his 100th birthday.
Doug McCandlish celebrated the special occasion with loved ones during a slap-up lunch at Wellshurst Golf and Country Club on July 31. The Queen sent a card congratulating Mr McCandlish and he proudly displayed it alongside a similar card received by his mother in 1969.
Mr McCandlish said the ingredients for his long and enjoyable life were keeping active and thinking to the future.
During the exceptionally challenging times of the 1930s, he helped out at a centre for unemployed men.
Daughter Sally Pearce said: “This inspired him to continue with charity work and for 25 years he was the secretary of The League of Friends of Crawley Hospital before moving to Hailsham. His working life was in the electricity industry. He and other family members clocked up 224 years of service by 1973, when he retired after 43 years.”
