Primary school children in Zimbabwe will get the opportunity to learn to play tag rugby when an Uckfield student visits them.
Becky Jones, 21, set off on a trip to the African country with the Tag Rugby Trust on Friday October 25.
The aim of the two week tour is to provide children in the selected schools with the opportunity to learn to play tag rugby and compete in a festival of rugby as a finale to the programme.
Teachers and local rugby volunteers will also be involded in the programme and left with necessary skills and resources to continue playing and to use sport to foster greater community ties and promote awareness of relevant ecological and health messages other charities are aiming to communicate to rural populations in Zimbabwe.
The Trust places significant emphasis on volunteers taking responsibility for the success of the tours.
Becky will be promoting rugby in local schools, organising daily training sessions and building towards a tournament at the end of her time there, which will encourage several communities to come together through rugby.
As well as working to put this programme together, she will help local volunteers with maintenance of school buildings and playgrounds.
Becky will stay with Imrire Rhino Conserve and promoting the conservation work carried out by the conserve will also be a key aspect of the trip.
Ensuring Zimbabwean school children understand the importance of preserving the wildlife around them is a message that can be spread particularly effectively when they are enjoying coming together on the pitch.
She believes this trip offers her the perfect opportunity to share with others the remarkable potential of rugby, which she had the honour of learning since she took up the sport two years ago.
Becky, who is a member of URFC Vixons Squad, has received no sponsorship for this trip, and has worked and fund raised to make it possible.
She will be paying for flights, accommodation and a donation to the charity so that it can continue its work. Any contribution towards her efforts would therefore be greatly appreciated.
Uckfield Rugby Football Club Founding Fathers have donated £250 towards her trip and also provided some rugby kit for her.
