The final creative touch has been added to Newhaven’s newly refurbished library with the installation of specially commissioned artwork.

Artist Zaneta Belasicova worked with the community to create the piece for the rear window of the High Street library after being chosen by a panel of volunteers, including library users.

The artwork was officially unveiled by Cllr Chris Dowling, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for community services.

“I am delighted with the result of this project,” said Cllr Dowling. “We asked for artwork that would encapsulate Newhaven and boost visitor experience and the new window certainly achieves this.

“As well as adding an artistic touch to the new library, the project has been something the community has really got behind, with many taking part in workshops and following the Zaneta’s progress.”

The artist held a workshop during August and invited the public to get involved in designing the artwork. She has also charted her progress on social media.

The design features many local landmarks and was designed using colours to complement the refurbished library’s interior.

The Newhaven artwork was part of the Transparent art project, funded by the Arts Council England and East Sussex County Council.

A £56,000 grant is being used to commission bespoke artwork in three library developments – Newhaven, Seaford and Hastings.
