Tributes have been paid to an expert horsewoman who died while draghunting near Heathfield on Saturday (March 4.)

Sue Webb, 64 from Vines Cross was secretary of the Mid-Surrey Farmers Draghounds which met at Dallington. Her horse, Ron fell at the first fence of the day. He survived the fall.

Her son, Chris Kenny who flew in from Dubai with his wife told the Sussex Express: “It was a really small fence; a holly hedge, just about three foot, six. The horse stumbled on landing. Mum went out of the front door. It was just the angle of the impact. She had ridden all her life.

“She was vice-chair of the British Show Horse Association and was a keen sidesaddle rider. She was also an enthusiastic sailor and used to sail out of Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne on her brother Nigel’s yacht.”

Mrs Webb was a prolific showing judge and a keen gardener. She had been organising a side saddle ‘dash’ for the Southdown and Eridge Hunt’s point-to-point at Godstone, Surrey on April 9.

Her husband, Peter, 70 was not hunting as he was checking fences for the hunt’s point-to-point scheduled for the following day. The event went ahead as planned and was a success in spite of poor weather. Supporters said: “This was testament to all the previous hard work carried out by the team.”

Almost £500 was collected in the sponsors’ ‘bar donation box’ which goes to the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance in memory of Mrs Webb. Organisers said: “Once again huge thanks to all who have rallied round during this difficult and shockingly sad time. Condolences and much love to the families and loved oned of Sue and Chris.”

Gina Weare went on: “I feel we should also add thoughts to the family of Tristan Voorspruy who was killed at his home in Kenya on Saturday night. Many drag members, particularly Peter and Sue enjoyed fantastic safari holidays with Tristan and his team over the years.”

Melanie Siggs posted: “What a sledgehammer of emotions. Still reeling, feeling numb at the news of Sue Webb and the tragedy of Tristan Voorspuy. Made me think of the pictures of Sue and Peter on safari and jumping the breakfast table. I hope those two find each other for more safaris and adventures.”
