Residents around Grosvenor Crescent, St Leonards, are concerned that section of the road and pavement that’s iced up following a major water leak is a ‘fatality waiting to happen’ after two people were hurt when they slipped and fell.

Edward Scott, 79, contacted the

He said: “Half the road - around 50 yards - flooded last week. I think there is a big leak under the road. It’s iced over and the pavement is lethal because you can’t see the ice. People are falling over - someone slipped and hurt their head yesterday and were taken to hospital, and the ambulance has been there again today after someone else fell. It’s absolutely treacherous.” Landlady of the Bo Peep pub, Sarah Gatcom, said the iced up section of road and pavement had been a major talking point with staff and customers. She said: “It’s awful. Another person’s fallen over today - people are slipping all over the place; it’s like a skating rink!”

The area of the leak which ices over when temperatures plummet is centred around the bus stop near the Bo Peep and Sarah says if something is not done about it soon there could be a serious accident. She said: “It’s really dangerous. If someone slipped and fell into the road they could be hit by a car or a bus. It’s a fatality waiting to happen.”

A Southern Water spokesman said initial investigations indicate the water leakage is coming from combined sewers that carry rainwater from roofs, roads and wastewater from homes. The company is continuing to investigate a possible blockage or other problems.
