THE CLOCK on the tower at Holy Cross Church, Uckfield will be removed this month for a long overdue clean. This follows years of fundraising and enough money has been raised for the task to begin, but more is needed.
When the clock is re-installed in July it will have been fitted with an electric automatic winding mechanism, pendulum regulator and a night silencer.
The fitting of auto-winding will allow a team of winders, who have to climb the tower twice a week to keep the clock going, to retire gratefully from their exhausting chore.
A final push to raise the final £3,500 needed is now being undertaken to enable the faded clock faces to be re-painted and the hands and figures to be re-gilded.
This will restore the clock to its original pristine condition and pride of place as Uckfield’s most prominent landmark, visible from all quarters of the town.
Holy Cross Church is seeking sponsors for re-gilding the 48 numerals at £20 per numeral and for the eight hands at £50 per hand.
Donations towards this final phase would be most welcome and can be sent to Holy Cross Church, Belmont Road, Uckfield, TN22 1BP.
