A house and a nearby public footpath have been cordoned off because of a swarm of wasps.

The unwelcome visitors were seen in a tree in the garden of the property in Rye Close at the junction with Levett Road, in Polegate.

Louise, who lives in the property, said she took the decision to cordon off the area after being told by pest controllers and Environmental Health officers that nothing could be done.

A officer from Rother District Council, which shares an Environmental Health department with Wealden District Council, said the wasps, which arrived three weeks ago, were feeding on the tree.

Louise said: “He said once they stopped feeding on the tree, that will be it.

“And that will be September time.”

She added: “I’m not happy - I have got young children of my own.

“But if that’s what it is, that’s what it is.”

A passer-by and father-of-two, who did not want to be named, said: “I was walking past with my children and I have to admit I was a little bit nervous seeing so many of them swarming around.

“We had to walk in the road to avoid them and it’s not far from the Cuckoo Trail which is popular with walkers and cyclists.

“I’ve been stung a few times before, once quite recently, and I’ve never had a reaction but you do hear about people going into anaphylactic shock.”
