NETS used by Hailsham Cricket Club were completely destroyed and pulled down to the ground by vandals.
The wanton behaviour took place after 9.30pm after players left the ground following a game at Western Road Recreation Ground on August 2.
Rob Wilkinson, club captain, said: “Throughout 2011 there has been regular damage happening throughout the week but never to this degree.
“The net has now had to been taken down six weeks early, preventing the seniors and 70 juniors from training on a weekly basis. The damage is so bad that it twisted the metal poles and ripped the netting beyond repair.”
Now the cricket club is going to have to find the resources to buy a brand new structure.
Mr Wilkinson added: “We are also looking into the prospect of putting up a protective fencing around the nets to try and keep them as safe as possible. This will obviously stop them being open to the public but hopefully keep them in better condition.”
If you can help out with metal scaffolding poles or protective fencing to support the cricket club Mr Wilkinson on 07980 146 841.
Police have been looking into the incident. Any witnesses phone 0845 60 70 999 quoting ref 0545 of 03/08.
