Police were expecting the A26 north-east of Lewes to remain closed until about 3.30pm today (Thursday July 10) while investigation and recovery work continued at the scene of a fatal collision.
A 30-year-old man from Uckfield died after his Ford Transit van was in collision with a 30-tonne Volvo lorry driven by a 55-year-old man from Newhaven.
The crash occurred near the junction of the A26 with Wellingham Lane, Ringmer.
The lorry driver has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, and detained for treatment.
He is understood to have serious injuries which are not considered to be life-threatening.
Sergeant Stacey Ellott, of East Sussex Road Policing Unit, said: “We would like to thank motorists’ for their patience while the road closure and diversions have been in place.
“In particular, thanks are also due to members of the public who stopped at the scene soon after the collision occurred ito give what help they could. Sadly, the driver of the van died.
“We are now appealing for anyone who saw what happened or who noticed either vehicle shortly before the collision to phone Sussex Police on 101 or email firstname.lastname@example.org, quoting Operation Tudor.”
