Waiting for Video...

THE OLYMPIC legacy is already inspiring youngsters in Uckfield.

On Sunday, before the Olympic closing ceremony, 111 children took part in the Uckfield children’s triathlon, one of the Kidstri series of events for boys and girls aged from eight to 14.

As for the Olympic athletes, a fine, sunny day was forecast meaning he turnout was excellent.

The youngsters swam, cycled and ran various distances.

Boosted by the Olympic gold medal won by Alistair Brownlee and his Bronze medal winning brother Johnny, the remaining places went very quickly before race day.

Each race was an individual start and against the clock so no-one knew their position until the results were compiled at the end of the event.

Each received a triathlon medal, goodie bag and lots of encouragement from the very large crowd of family and friends.

The cycle, run and transition were all on the Community College sports field, possibly for the last time before the new all-weather pitch is built on the course.

The medal ceremony was held in two sections, a Novice event and Tristars with lots of photo taking, cheers and smiling faces.

Many of these children will return to join in triathlon again.

Paul Hedger of Hedgehogtri, the race organiser said: “It was a great successful team effort and was enjoyed by those taking part, many trying out the sport for the very first time.

“The Kidstri series has been great fun this summer and the Olympic medal win has highlighted how fun the sport can be and boosted interest.”

The next event in the Kids tri series is part of the Crowborough Triathlon weekend on the 15th and 16th September. The children’s event is on the Saturday over the same distances and the adult ‘Sprint and Novice’ Triathlons on the Sunday.
