SLIDESHOW: Uckfield Carnival
THIS YEAR’S two-day Uckfield Carnival and bonfire was the ‘best ever’ according to organiser Carol Watts-Arnold.
She said: “We were really pleased with the whole evening. It went extremely well – the whole town supported us and the weather was great. I am so glad it all happened 24 hours before the fire. We had 3,500 torches lit.
“There were no incidents. Thank you to everyone.”
The weekend raised £3668.85 for local good charities and deserving causes.
The HSBC building was one of those severely damaged in Sunday night’s blaze.
Members of bonfire societies including Crowborough, Lewes Borough, Hailsham and Maresfield from across Sussex took part in Friday night’s torchlit procession.
Saturday’s procession started from the Victoria Pleasure Ground and watchers were thrilled it was so big and colourful. Taking part were the Cats Protection League, Rocks Park School, Dawson Hart, Girl Guides and Uckfield FM. The excitement was topped when children from across the town displayed their imaginative costumes in the fancy dress competition.
Carol went on: “I’ve had a day’s rest – now I’m getting ready for next year!”
