SLIDESHOW: Uckfield musicians put on a show to remember

Waiting for Video...

UCKFIELD’S Bandstand Marathon was part of the London 2012 Festival, a spectacular 12-week nationwide celebration from June 21 to September 9 bringing together leading artists from across the world with the very best from the UK.

Uckfield was selected as one of 300 official Bandstand Marathon events to be held. These were co-ordinated national events as part of the official Cultural Olympiad and at Uckfield, the Bandstand took place outside the Civic Centre providing a free promenade event with live music by Uckfield performers between 1-5pm.

Local musicians had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in the largest closing cultural event of London 2012 thanks to The Fletching Singers, with kind support from Uckfield Town Council and local business. The musical performance held in Uckfield was one of hundreds of outdoor, community concerts taking place simultaneously across the country, making up the Bandstand Marathon.

Collections and souvenir programme sales raised money for local charities including Uckfield Housebound, Chailey Heritage and Demelza House children’s hospice. It incorporated music of all types, including bands, groups, choirs and individual musicians and singers which all contributed towards creating a cultural legacy for others. The Uckfield Bandstand was hosted by MC Barry Horsman who presented performers and kept the event moving along smoothly.

Local musicians and singers took part and included the Uckfield Singers supported by local acts including Uckfield Concert Brass, Uckfield Singers, Debs Dancers, Lucy Williams and rock and blues band Red Butler. All performed at a temporary bandstand in front of the Uckfield Civic Centre.

People attended throughout the day. There were between 100-150 people at any one time and organisers estimate more than 500 in total watched the day’s performances unfold.
