Sussex Express walk of the week - Maynards Green to Vines Cross
The Sussex Express walk of the week is a four kilometre stroll from Maynards Green to Vines Cross and back via a different route.
It’s a lovely walk with stiles, meadowlands, plenty of unploughed pasture, two belts of woodland and a stunning garden or two.
You begin in Sicklehatch Lane, climb up towards Grantley’s Farm then head off across a couple of fields before hitting Nettlesworth Woods.
The walk continues to Nettlesworth Lane in Vines Cross (passing some glorious cottages with gardens bedecked with gnomes, windmills and rotating sunflowers) before striking off westwards again along a footpath and driveway to a farm where you can buy fresh-made preserves and jams (plus fruit and veg in season.)
Through some gates, over a stile (blackberries here are fat and juicy,) down a hill and over two plank bridges buried in a thick wood, before climbing again to Sicklehatch Lane.
Look out for a cottage with a catslide roof called Leather Bottel, the lovely Twitterings, geese at a farm, hares, buzzards and a garden in Vines Cross complete with Grecian statues and a large lake.
This isn’t really suitable for people with mobility problems, but an averagely fit person can easily do it in an hour (as long as you don’t buy the jams or pick blackberries.)
More walks to follow.”
