Talented teen is through to finals

Waiting for Video...

A teenager is celebrating this week after her dream of becoming a pop star was given a boost.

Hailsham singing hopeful Amy Ives has won a place in the regional finals of national singing competition TeenStar.

The 17-year-old performed an Adele song accompanied by Callum Good on acoustic guitar to gain the place.

The former Hailsham College student is now preparing for the finals within The O2 in London.

The music student at Park College, Eastbourne will now pit her ‘unique’ voice against other talented hopefuls in front of hundreds of audience members and a professional judging panel.

She will then face anxious wait to see if she has won a place at the National Grand Final.

Amy said: “I was quite nervous during the heat. This was my first audition, but now I’m hoping to do more open mic events

“Since I started college I’ve become more confident to sing in front of people and get feedback.

“I’ve always sung but it’s only last year I begun to sing in front of people and I’ve been getting more into it. I never told anyone this is what I wanted to do, it’s been a big change for me.

“At school I wasn’t confident enough because people are judgemental with what you do, so it’s only when I left school I thought what I wanted to do to as a career and this is what I want to do.

“My big dream are to be a pop star, but to even get noticed would be a bonus.

“I mainly sing chart songs, Pop and R+B, but I can sing a bit of soul and enjoy singing Adele songs because of the range and you get to show of what you can do.

“Now I just want to do what I love as a career.”

Amy’s mum, Sharon Ives , know all about the industry after spending years as a professional singer, first as Blue Coat at Pontins then performing cabarets, on cruise ships and even a Royal Command Performance.

Mrs Ives said: “She was always in her bedroom singing and singing 24/7 and shes recorded a few bits and pieces and I thought ‘wow’, she really can sing. It’s quite a unique voice, quite modern.

“As a youngster she was always just singing for pleasure and messing around but now she’s so focused and wants to make it her career.

“It’s not an easy business to get into but Amy can try and hopefully with any luck earn a living from it. With all this exposure from the competition and the regional finals you never know.”
