Video: Paraglider crash near Firle Bostal

Waiting for Video...

A WOMAN from London suffered serious back injuries on Friday (July 20) after her paraglider crashed into a tree and she fell about 25ft to the ground at Firle Bostal.

Emergency services teams were called to the scene near Firle Beacon at about 11.45am.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service sent a technical rescue crew from Lewes, along with the line rescue teams from Battle and Bexhill.

The woman was stranded 45 metres down the bankside and various emergency services worked alongside each other to assist, including: crews from the Kent Helicopter Emergency Service (HEMS), the Hazard Area Rescue Team (HART), South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAMB), Sussex Police and ESFRS.

ESFRS Watch Manager Dave Washington said: “The rescue was undertaken in a controlled manor to prevent further injury, lasting 45 minutes from arrival.

“The woman was then taken to the Trauma Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.”

The 32 year old was taken by land ambulance to hospital suffering non life threatening pain in her back and pelvis.

Dave Lewis, from Skylark Paragliding, whose Landrover is visible in the video, said: “In fact I was present on the site, administered first aid and assisted the emergency services. The first time I met the pilot was after the accident when I was checking her condition.”

Mr Lewis said none of his students were involved in the crash.
