VIDEO: Women’s Institute pays a visit to Lewes Priory
Ninety women from various Women’s Institutes in East Sussex were undaunted by the rain when they visited Lewes Priory Park on Friday, International Women’s Day.
The trip included an extended walk around the site of the Priory, once home to medieval monks of the Cluniac order.
Local historian Dr Anthony Freeman gave guided talks on the history of the buildings and the surrounding park with its reconstructed medieval herb garden.
The women also visited the Gundrada Chapel in Southover Church which was opened by its Custodian Marcus Taylor.
Brass-rubbing and medieval tile-printing activities were run by Lewes Priory Trust Education Officers Helen Chiasson and Kate Hickmott.
Penny Crawley, from Kingston WI, said: “Everybody I spoke to enjoyed themselves and I am really grateful to everyone from the Church and the Trust for their efforts.”
Another WI member, Ursula Winfield, added: “Thank you all very much for such a wonderful afternoon. I enjoyed the whole experience and could have stayed all day!
“I shall certainly be back with my camera when I don’t have to cope with an umbrella.”
Priory Park is open all year round and admission is free. Please visit the website (www.lewespriory.org.uk) to find
