A first-time entrant to the Seaford in Bloom Floral Competition walked away with four prizes from the awards ceremony on Tuesday August 13.
Susan Luckin won the awards for Best New Entry, Hanging Basket (Private), Best Back Garden and Best Overall Entry.
This might be the last Seaford in Bloom Floral Competition, after the sad news last week that the voluntary group would fold, unless more volunteers step in to run the contest. In Bloom chairman Isabel Stephenson welcomed more than 80 guests to the awards ceremony at Dean Place in Alfriston. Seaford in Bloom spokesperson Jim Murray said: “There were more entries than ever in this year’s Floral Competition.”
Ashley Stephenson L.V.O gave a talk on the unusual plants and flora that can be seen in Seaford. Isabel thanked the judges, Ashley Stephenson and Phillip Pople. The awards were presented by Seaford mayor Anthony White. New entrant Debbie Hibberd won the Best Front Garden award and the Plantsman’s Cup for Best Plant Interest. Debbie was also runner up in the Best New Entry category.
John Price presented The Ivy Price Cup for High Standard of Achievement to Crooked Lane Estates. Jim added: “There was also loud applause when 92-year-old Mrs Barbara Bax, a long time loyal supporter of Seaford in Bloom, was awarded the Mayor’s Cup for Outstanding Effort.”
The Patrick McCausland Trophy for special contribution to Seaford in Bloom was awarded to Europlants which supplied and maintained the town’s floral displays over the years. Cllr White said: “The town council and staff are grateful to Seaford in Bloom for making Seaford such a pleasant town in which to live.”
