WOMEN’S CRICKET: Sussex vs Surrey County women’s cricket match is on Sunday starting 11am, at Sheffield Park’s historic cricket ground. This is the first time that Sheffield Park has hosted a women’s county cricket match and is sure to be an exciting game. Entry is via the landscape garden and normal admission applies.

NIGHTJARS: Nightjars on Red House Common with Ian Woolsey, of the Commons Society, takes place on Tuesday. Meet at Red House Common car park, Warrs Hill Road, ready to start at 9pm. This will be a chance to hear the sound of male birds churring on the Commons on a summer evening. The finish will be in the dark so do take a torch.

TALK: Patrons, Places and Landscape Design is the subject of a talk at Sheffield Park on Thursday at 6.30pm. National Trust garden history specialist Richard Wheeler explores the life of Capability Brown and reflects on the challenges of working with such large landscapes and demanding patrons. The cost is £18 adults with refreshments included and booking is essential on 01825 790231.

COACH OUTING: To Dungeness National Nature Reserve takes place on Saturday June 18 from 9.30am to 5pm. This is a follow up to an excellent talk, to the Commons Society, by Nikki Gammons in 2014 on the Bumble Bee. Nikki will be the guide at this wonderful reserve. There will be an afternoon tea stop on the return journey. The cost is about £15 and booking is essential, just call Linda Kent, on 01444 440622.

WORLD WAR 2 DAY: Is on Saturday June 25 from midday to 4pm on the village green. All are welcome to enjoy vehicles of the period, music and dancing, food, beer and Pimms tents, stalls, games, art exhibition and grand raffle.

MODEL RAILWAY WEEKEND: Is being held on Saturday and Sunday June 25 and 26 at the Bluebell Railway. Model and miniature railway displays will be at both Horsted Keynes and Sheffield Park stations which will be open from 10am to 4pm. Do go along, enjoy a steam train ride and explore each of the stations and exhibitions. Passengers holding a travel ticket gain free entry to any stations. FRIENDS OF CHAILEY WINDMILL: The Windmill and Rural Life Museum will be open on Sunday June 26 from 3pm to 5 pm. Among the exhibits are photographs of Chailey from the early 20th century, the restored 1856 clock from St Peter’s Church and a record of the village’s military history going back to the late 1700’s.Entry is £1 for adults and 50p for children aged 10 to 16 years. SMALL GRANTS: Each year the parish council makes a number of small grants (typically around £250) to assist societies and other Chailey organisations with their administrative costs, or with a special project. The closing date for applications is June 30 and the award of Grants will be considered at full council on July 19. An application form and further details is available at http://www.chailey.org/.

EVENING WILDLIFE WALK: At Sheffield Park and Garden takes place on Friday July 1 at 8.30pm. Do join this evening walk to discover the nocturnal wildlife living on the parkland. The cost for adults is £6 and booking is essential on 01825 790231.

BIOBLITZ: At Sheffield Park and Garden on Saturday July 2 from 10am to 5pm. Just drop in to basecamp and help to identify as many species as possible on the floodplain meadow. SUSSEX FOOD AND DRINK FESTIVAL: Is at the Bluebell Railway Horsted Keynes Station on Saturday and Sunday July 2 and 3 from 10am to 5.15pm. It will be a celebration of great food, drink and craft as trade stalls will be lining the platforms with the finest selection of local and specialist food and drink from across the county. As well as food and drink there will be quality crafts and giftware by local artists, makers and independent businesses. Enjoy freshly cooked bites, local craft beers or a glass of Pimms in the picnic area where you can relax and watch the atmospheric steam trains that will be running throughout the day between Sheffield Park, Horsted Keynes, Kingscote and East Grinstead Stations. There will be music from The Singing Chef, plenty of entertainment for the children and the opportunity to enter the free draw to win a dining experience on the Golden Arrow for two.
