COUNTRYSIDE ACCESS: East Sussex County Council is consulting on the Countryside Access Strategy until Friday July 29 on future management of its Public Rights of Way and countryside sites, which include Chailey Common. The consultation appears to confuse management of footpaths with the more demanding management of areas such as Chailey Common, twice the size of the other seven areas put together and with its own ecology, currently under improvement using a National England grant. COLLECTORS FAIR: Toy and Rail Collectors Fair takes place at the Bluebell Railway on Saturday July 30 and Sunday July 31 from 10am to 4pm at Horsted Keynes Station. There will be railway artefacts, model railway equipment and much more in stalls on the platform and in a marquee in the station car park. Normal travel fares apply and a Horsted Keynes station admission ticket, £3, covers both the station and marquee.

MUSEUM: The mill and Rural Life Museum will be open on Sunday July 31 from 3pm to 5pm, admission costs £1 adults and 50p children aged 10-16. For more details call John Smith on 01825 723519.

50 THINGS: Wild Wednesdays take place every Wednesday in August, at Sheffield Park and Garden at 11am. The cost for each child is £3 to £5. This is another chance to take part in these most popular workshops and tick off a different 50 Things activity every Wednesday during the school holidays. PUNCH AND JUDY: Shows every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout August there will be Punch and Judy Shows at the Bluebell Railway Horsted Keynes station. Show Times are 11.30am, 12.45pm, 2pm and 3.15pm and each show lasts approximately 20 minutes.

JOUTSENO GOSPEL CHOIR: On tour from Finland, will be at St Peter’s Church, Chailey Green, on Friday August 5 from 6pm to 7.30pm. The choir numbers about 20 singers in addition to the conductor, a pianist and possibly a saxophonist. The choir sings mainly gospel but in addition to Christian music the choir has included some pop music into its repertoire. Presently the choir’s favourite songs are gospel classics Oh Happy Day and Jesus is the Answer and a pop music jewel All of me ( by John Legend ) which has been arranged for sopranos, altos and tenors by Mark De-Lisser. The Joutseno church has a familiar biblical text on its wall: God is love. This is the message the Joutseno Gospel Choir wants to deliver by singing music which brings comfort and joy and touches the hearts of the listeners. There will be an interval when tea and cake will be available. Tickets, from The Friends of St Peter’s Church, are £5 (accompanied children free) and will be available on the door or from Janet Barnes on 01825 722574 or email [email protected]. If you are unable to listen to the choir that day they will also be singing on Saturday August 6 in the Chapel at Chailey Heritage from 6pm to 7.30pm, and the cost again will be £5. They are a really lovely choir and I hope readers will be able to go to one of these concerts.

SHAPING CHAILEY: The Steering Group places current drafts of the Neighbourhood Plan on the website (www.chailey.org) for comment. There will be consultation meetings in the autumn but they welcome comment and advice as they proceed, please use this month’s ‘prompt’ to consider Chailey’s Vision Statement and initial thoughts on housing and design.

PLAYING WITH PERSPECTIVE: A trail at Sheffield Park and Garden and continues until Sunday September 11. Excite your senses on this interactive trail involving mirrors, sounds and textures and see the garden from a whole new perspective. Normal admission applies.

SEASIDE WEEKEND: All the fun of the seaside will be at the Bluebell Railway on Saturday August 6 and Sunday August 7. Take the trains from Sheffield Park, East Grinstead and Kingscote to Horsted Keynes and visit the seaside. The Paddock at Horsted Keynes will be transformed into a sandy beach; there will be donkey rides, Punch and Judy Shows and an end of Pier Show of Humour and Song. For lunch why not enjoy traditional fish and chips followed by an ice cream? The Pantry Tea Room will also be open throughout the day for cream teas and cake. The Kids for a Quid offer will be available so all children aged 3to 15 years will travel at just £1 on all services all day. Book at least eight days in advance with Bluebell Bonus tickets and get discounts on adult tickets too.

EXHIBITION: Changing Seasons exhibition at Sheffield Park and Garden starts on Saturday August 6 and continues until Sunday September 4. This exhibition by the Nature Corridors for All group is a chance to explore the changing of the seasons and see the work involved in restoring the Capability Brown landscape with this. Normal admission applies.

MINI BEASTS: Discover the weird and wonderful world of the mini beasts and their hiding places. Come and see what you can find on Wednesday August 17 from 10am to midday. Especially suitable for children, and their parents too, for a fun morning organised by the Commons Society. Take pots, sweep nest and a magnifying glass with you if you have them. Meet at Red House Common car park in Warrs Hill Road North Chailey.

TALK: Discovering Capability Brown is the subject of a talk at Sheffield Park on Saturday August 20 at 6pm. Author Sarah Rutherford talks about her new book Capability Brown, Monarch of Landscape and gives insights into the life and work of this revered garden designer. Admission is £18 for adults and refreshments are included. Booking is essential on 01825 790231.

EARLY BIRD WALK: With Ian Woolsey, of the Commons Society, is on Wednesday August 24 from 7am to 9am. The walk will be on Red House Common followed by a hearty breakfast in the Forget Me Not Tearoom. Meet at the car park in Warrs Hill Road North Chailey. Visitors most welcome.
