100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 14 April 1916, Fletching. Agent for this paper Mr Parkes Post Office, Fletching. Cantata. At the Parish Church on Sunday after evensong, a sacred cantata, From Cross to Crown, was sung by the Fletching Choral Society, of which Mrs H Gravely is conductor. The soprano solos by Mrs D Bolt and Mrs Gravely and the bass solos by Mr Bolt, Mr Moore, and Mr Martin were much appreciated, and the choruses were well rendered. Mr A H Saunders, the organist, accompanied with his usual ability. The offertory was given to provide new lamps for the church.

RAINFALL IN PILTDOWN: The impact of storm Katie late in the month produced above average rainfall of 86mm compared with the 18-year average of 55mm. This was well below the 127mm which fell in 2001, but substantially up on last year when I recorded just 23mm.
