FORGET ME NOTS: Story-teller, actor, singer, Bernard Tagliavini is entertaining the Fletching Forget-me-Nots at 1pm in Fletching Village Hall on Thursday. Bernard came last year and we opened the invitation to Fletching parishioners. For a small fee of £5 we provide tea/coffee, sandwiches and cake, and all are welcome again this year. Anyone interested in attending this event please contact Lesley on 01825 723852 by Monday April 18. Also we are looking for new members to keep this club going. We are a very active group but we need young blood to help out.

We had a very lovely fish and chips lunch in the village hall for Valentine month which was enjoyed by all. In March we were in the village hall and the members got involved making Easter bonnets, with a small grant from AIRS to cover the cost of materials. We are hoping to go to Southdown Garden Centre for afternoon tea in May.(Lesley Dickens).

100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 21 April 1916. Cinema Posters. ‘Revolting and Degrading.’ At their monthly meeting at the Council Chamber on Monday evening, Lewes Education Committee discussed the question of the deleterious effect which sensational cinema advertisements had upon children.

Lawless Youths of Lewes. Councillor Lloyd remarked that the decision had been inspired by the general lawless conduct of the youths of Lewes. At the last meeting of the Town Council it was reported that boys had bombarded the smallpox hospital to such an extent that in two days damage to the amount of nearly £20 had been done. Since then a gentleman who lived on the outskirts of the town had given information that his fence had been attacked in such a way that it was ‘blown to bits by stones’. He (the speaker) supposed that the lads were practicing throwing hand grenades, but he hoped that if the culprits were caught the magistrates would show them that their method of learning a branch of warfare was so expensive that it could not be allowed to continue. In view of what had occurred, people who were concerned about the conduct of local lads had been casting about for a cause, and had come to the conclusion that pictures, which had been displayed recently on hoardings, had something to do with the outbreak. It seemed a pity that cinemas, which might provide an elevating form of entertainment, should exert a bad influence on the children of the town. It was hoped that the visit of a deputation to the managers would prove to them that it was worthwhile to give a different class of entertainment.
