100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 28 April 1916. Fletching. Mr F W Parkes, grocer and postmaster, asked for the exemption of an assistant named A. Hobbs, saying that he had been hoping to get female assistance and had been trying to replace the man. The application was refused.

Piltdown. That he is indispensable to the proper performance of the work on the farm was the reason why Mr. S. Fenner supported the application of Fredk. Diplock, his carter. Mr Fenner said that he could not possibly do without Diplock. Of 171 acres which comprised the farm 86 were arable. There were 70 cows, 15 heifers, 6 calves and a bull, and to do all the work he had a staff of six including himself. He did not think it was possible to substitute male with female labour. It was stated that Diplock was 24 years of age and single and the Military Representative pointed out that after May 1 no single man under 25 will be considered to be in a certified occupation. He expressed some doubt as to the meaning of the regulations. A member: I doubt if they know themselves. The case was adjourned for information concerning the regulations.
