100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 12 May 1916. Uckfield Rural Tribunal. With the calling up of married men the number of applications for exemptions or postponement of service has increased considerably, as might well be anticipated. The Tribunal for the Rural District of Uckfield was engaged from 10.30 till past four o’clock on Wednesday.

BIG JOB AT PILTDOWN: In asking for the exemption of E T Carter, a nursery gardener and carter, of Hobbs Cottage, Piltdown, Mr J Dennett, his employer, stated that he had nine acres of land and 50,000 forest trees to plant. He had only his son besides Turner, and the work could not be done by one. Applicant’s health was very indifferent, and he would be glad of a postponement till the end of June. This was agreed to.

RAINFALL IN PILTDOWN: Total rainfall this month was 49mm, which is equal to the 18 year average; more than last year when we had only 11mm but substantially less than the 114mm recorded during the wet spring in 2000.
