Heathfield, Punnetts Town, Broad Oak & Cross In Hand

HISTORY SOCIETY: In East Sussex we are fortunate to have some of the most beautiful castles in the country and our members were able to appreciate them once more with the excellent slides accompanying a talk by Charles Harding entitled Castles of South East England. Starting with the '˜perfect castle' Bodiam we went back in time to castles depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry and then to the reality in Hastings and Pevensey. Next we looked at Lewes and Tonbridge, Dover and finally Herstmonceaux. On the way we discovered how and why castles developed as they did and what life was like for the inhabitants.

Our next meeting is on Thursday, June 16 at 7.30pm in the Ian Price Room at Heathfield Community Centre when our subject will be Isambard Kingdom Brunel. We are all familiar with the famous picture of him next to his ship, The Great Britain, but what do we know of the man? Come along and find out more.

CROSS IN HAND WI: At our meeting on Wednesday May 25 members enjoyed a ploughman’s lunch and homemade crumbles and custard before getting down to the serious business of discussing this year’s Resolutions. After a year-long process of debates and eliminations by WI groups across the country, the list of proposed resolutions is whittled down and this year the two which have the majority vote are: Avoid food waste and address foot poverty and appropriate care in hospitals for people with dementia. These two resolutions are now carried forward to the National Conference for final debate and if successful can form the basis for the National Federation of Women’s Institutes campaign and activity. With the more serious business over, members were then invited to air their own annoyances by taking part in our own version of Room 101 in which members could banish to room 101 all their pet hates, there’s nothing like a good old moan with friends, followed by a cup of tea, to send us on our way smiling.
