QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY: Hellingly Parish Council would like to invite you to the Queen's 90th Birthday Celebration tomorrow, Saturday, starting at noon at Hellingly Village Hall and the adjacent field. Bring your own picnic, prize for best table/blanket or book a place to dine in the hall (food supplied) accompanied by the piano for a cost of £5, decorate your table for a prize. Teas and coffees will be served by the Guides. The Harmonie Concert Band will be playing from noon in the marquee. Races for the children with prizes, tug of war, Punch and Judy, ice cream van, Maypole dancing by the Brownies, a Royal Quiz. CHURCH SERVICE: On Sunday as it is the official 90th birthday of our Queen, Hellingly Church congregation will be celebrating at the 10.45am service with a non-Eucharistic service of praise and celebration for our Queen’s 90 years and her example of faith. It is hoped they will be joined by members of the parish council and members of the uniformed organisations.

OPEN GARDEN: This event is in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice and is on Saturday June 18 at Misty Acres, Lower Horsebridge, BN27 4DN. This lovely garden is full of birds, rabbits, a wildlife pond, chickens wander around the field and honey bees can be seen at work. There is limited wheelchair access. COFFEE MORNING: A fundraising event on June 18 at Hellingly Church from 10am to noon. Cake stall, raffle garden, produce and plants, bring and buy and refreshments.

BLUEBELL WALK: All the charities this year raised a combined total of £57,385, which added to the monies raised since 1972 (in today’s value) makes a grand total of £888,338. Last year organisers were delighted to receive the Visit England 2015 accolade Hidden Gem, apparently the only one awarded in the South East. Having that success under their belt, they have now put the Arlington Bluebell Walk and Farm Trail forward to Tourism South East, to their annual Beautiful South Awards for Excellence under the Tourism Event of the Year category, and the winners will be announced in the autumn.

WORLD WAR II WEEKEND: Step back in time June 18 and 19 to the 1940s as Michelham Priory pays tribute to the war years with displays, activities and entertainment. Discover the role that Michelham played during WW2 by visiting the display gallery in the main house. Traditional WW2 Singing and Entertainment in the Elizabethan barn. The Man from the Ministry will be available with tips on making tasty food on your rations and powdered egg. Get up close to the veteran vehicles and artefacts or chat to the veterans about their Experiences. Watch out for Viv the Spiv and other wartime characters. Children’s hands on activities throughout the day and wartime themed products available in the Dovecote Shop. Usual admission fees apply.

DICKER DAY: An annual event for many years, Dicker Day organisers are raising the bar this year! On Sunday June 26 the villagers are welcoming one and all to a day of family fun at the Upper Dicker Village Hall and field like we all remember from our childhood. Classic races, fun and interesting stalls, food and a live band together with a 50’s theme should give everyone a day to remember. Tug o’ War (Ladies verses Gentlemen), a fun scruffy dog show (dogs who look like their owners etc) and a beer tent. Come dressed in 50’s style, bring Granny and Grandpa, try nettle and thyme cordial cocktails to make the afternoon a splash. Be astounded by the History exhibition with reminiscences of some of our older Villagers and have a bash at the Mums n Dads Egg and Spoon race. The band will rock your day, the barbecue will tantalise you meat eaters and the vegetarian fare on offer from our 50’s style catering van will astound you along with cream teas and strawberries and cream. Bring your kids so they know what a good old Village Fete is all about.

LITTER PICK: It was noted in the draft minutes of the recent PC meeting that a number of residents from Arlington recently conducted two litter picks covering the lanes from Berwick Station cross roads through Arlington Village and along Primrose Farm on Caneheath. During these litter picks they collected 100 bags of general litter and many additional items which included large bits of moulded plastic from various vehicles, a child’s car seat, car tyres, three televisions, a fridge and two bags containing the rotting body of a dog. They also collected dozens of empty half bottles of vodka and many empty beer cans scattered along the entire length of the area. This would be referred to the necessary authorities for some suggested action to be taken.
