CREAM TEAS: All proceeds are in aid of the Memorial Garden on Sunday July 31. Cream Teas will be served in the garden at brook Cottage, Mill Lane, Hellingly from 2pm to 5pm and the Wealden Brass Band will be playing from 2pm to 4pm. Teas will be £4.

MOTHERS’ UNION: At the June meeting of the MU members enjoyed looking at the slides Gerald and Cissie had taken of their holiday in Japan. Yvonne Knight reports: First stop Tokyo, a very busy, crowded capital city with many ‘post’ shops and streets full of people rushing to cross the roads, full of traffic by day and lit up by a mass of neon light at night. The scenes of skyscrapers and vast modern hotels cheek by jowl with the quiet serenity of the old Imperial Palace, a breath-taking contrast. A nostalgic look at the only remaining street of wooden buildings once typical of the old Tokyo. Time to look at scenes of the Golden Temple, one of the important temples which still play a big part in people’s lives. The ladies are wearing their best kimonos as it is a special day. Two very busy days sight-seeing with photos of beautiful buildings, architecture and sculpture. Next we saw photos of Japan’s famous Bullet Train which runs along the Old Imperial road, a conservation area of wooden buildings set in a forest of huge trees. On to Kyoto with pictures of the 1700 temples and shrines where incense is burned and prayers are chanted, plus more brightly coloured kimonos for sale to the tourists.

Gerald showed us pictures of a typical tea-making ceremony using special pots, spoons and cups, a very old fashioned religious rite. Scenes of temples surrounded by Giant Buddhas and the Remarkable Temple with a highly decorated interior. Finally a most amusing wedding scene of multiple brides and grooms. Before leaving Kyoto, Gerald and Cissie at last got some good views of the famous Mount Fuji covered in snow.

Thanks to Gerald and Cissie for an enlightening glimpse of a city and country still shrouded in some mystery.

PET SERVICE: The monthly Family Service on the fourth Sunday of each month at 10.45am at Hellingly is well supported and is enjoyed by all. For July it is taking the form of a pet service in celebration of all things furry. If you have a pet you can bring along, then please come and join in the fun.
