FOOTPATHS GROUP: The sun shone on the 16 walkers that left Polegate train station for a five mile walk that, just like the army of the Grand Old Duke of York, marched us up to the top of the hill and marched us down again. The hill in question was Combe Hill and its 193 metre elevation affords panoramic views over all points of the compass. At the top, when we recovering from the climb up, members of the party noticed a large halo effect around the sun. A smart phone referral to the wonderful Wikipedia identified it as a nimbus, icebow or gloriole. In this case it should be more precisely termed as a 22 degree halo because this is the size of the circle around the sun. It is caused by ice crystals suspended in the cirrus clouds some three to six miles up in the upper troposphere. The walk back to the station took us through Willingdon, along the very busy main road and finally across country along a track that was surprisingly un-muddy. Hilda and Graham led the party.

FINE ARTS SOCIETY: Uckfield and Lewes Decorative and Fine Arts Society next meet on Wednesday May 11 at 2.30pm in Uckfield Civic Centre. The talk is Treasures of the V&A’s Renaissance Galleries by Paula Nuttall.

On Friday May 13 at 7pm in Trinity Church St John sub Castro Chris Burt will be sharing his experiences and pictures of wildlife care in the Trinity Church South Malling churchyard, with drinks and nibbles. If you need a little quiet time and some fresh air, do visit one of our Trinity churchyards and enjoy the ecology and wildlife. Services this Sunday at St John sub Castro: 11.15am informal family service with singers and band; 4.30pm evening prayer, a traditional service.
