HISTORY STUDY GROUP: This evening (Friday) Eastbourne local history enthusiast and guide Alan Wenham will give an illustrated talk entitled Eastbourne’s East End at 7.45pm in the village hall. London was not the only town with an East End very different from the fashionable residential areas to its west. Behind the original Eastbourne Sea Houses was an artisans’ quarter inhabited by fishermen, blacksmiths, building labourers and laundry workers. While much of Victorian and Edwardian Eastbourne was a prosperous and well-laid-out area for the fashionable, life in the working class east side was very different in character, attracting the attention of local philanthropists and the Salvation Army.
