Ninfield and Hooe

BEAUTIFUL WEEKEND: What a beautiful weekend, and made all the more special by celebrating my esteemed Mama's birthday; a long Sunday lunch with family, friends and of course, the five cavorting canines. All good fun and the diets were definitely off for the day. So, the first thing to mention is the big beacon lighting events, coming up on April 21, in both Ninfield and Hooe. The email of confirmation has come from HRH Prince Charles' office that Hooe's official lighting time is 7.30pm and Ninfield is 8.30pm. Both villages have full agendas of celebrations, including barbecues, music and the singing of the National Anthem, and both villages will be thrilled to see all residents at their respective beacon venues at their allotted times. Or, you could do both you know.

CHRISTIAN VOICES: Tomorrow, Saturday, at the Methodist Church Hall, 3pm the performance of Alan Young and Dave Chamberlain’s Hearts of Gold. A musical play based on the Bible story of Ruth, Naomi and Boaz. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy this fabulous production. There will be afternoon teas and refreshments served afterwards at approx 3.45pm. Admission is free, a full house is expected, so get there early to grab your seat.

NINFIELD ACTION GROUP: The next meeting will be on Monday in the Reading Room, Church Lane at 7.30pm.This will be a good chance to get all the housing/planning updates from the open meeting held in March, which over 90 residents attended. There are volunteers in place as area co-ordinators and they will have details on what has been researched and collated for their specific parts of the village. Chairman, Ian Drewer, would be pleased to see as many people as possible on Monday, and he will be putting together a presentation for the forthcoming Annual Parish Meeting in May. Please do go along and have your say, put your contribution into the mix and really find out the facts on what is proposed for Ninfield.

CARNIVAL ASSOCIATION: Wednesday, 8.30pm at the Tin Hut is the next meeting of the carnival committee. This will be focussing on the Pram Race event, due to be held on Bank Holiday Monday. The Wacky Races, as they are affectionately called, are always popular; and this year the Committee have decided to raise the race winners’ prize money as an incentive for more of the youngsters to come and take part. There will a true Le Mans type start line, Trophies to win and a raffle, but most of all this is the countdown for creating those homemade karts and fancy dress costumes. If anyone would like to come and join the committee and help put on this event and then the Carnival in July, it would be great to see you. All volunteers are embraced with open arms. QUIZ NIGHT: Saturday April 16, 7.30pm is the Memorial Hall Quiz Night. The Memorial Hall doors open at 7pm for you and your teams to grab their tables, get yourselves comfy and brains in gear. The price is £5 per person and this includes a full ploughman’s supper and tea/coffee. Bring your own booze. Just remember also to pack a glass, some cutlery and any brain-boosting nibbles that you might desire. This really is a fun night, a great quiz and the chance to catch up with people for a gossip. If you can’t get a team of six together just book as many as you have, or come on your own and there will be teams made up on the night. All proceeds will go to the hall refurbishments and that very necessary new oil tank. Call Jennifer on 892878, or me, to book.

OPEN DAY: As promised last week, I have further information from Carole Lawrence on the open day at the Bowls Club. It’s on Sunday April 17 from 2.30pm onwards. Everyone is welcome to go along and have a go at the game of bowls, with the only stipulation being that people wear trainers or very flat shoes on the greens. There will be instructors on hand and at the end of the afternoon a lovely tea will be served. Notices are up around the club and on notice boards round the village. Please go and see this historic and beautiful club and try your hand at a game of bowls.

HOOE PARISH COUNCIL: Will next meet on Monday April 18 at the village hall at 7.30pm and as always, everyone from Hooe is encouraged to attend. There are a lot of topics being discussed at the moment, all of which will have some effect on people in the area. So whether its highway matters, housing or litter picking, try and find out how you can be involved and have your say. Call Sally Durman on 893007 or email [email protected] for more information.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: After the colourful success of the fabulous show on Easter Saturday, the horticultural society will meet next on Monday April 18 at the Memorial Hall, 7.30pm. There will be a speaker for the evening, a welcome return for Harry Townsend, and his tale will be of his 800 mile trip up New Zealand, pushing a wheelbarrow. Afterwards there will be refreshments and a raffle; and this will be the final meeting until the autumn. There also will be the annual Plant Sale and Coffee Morning on Saturday April 23, with a fantastic range of plants at reasonable prices, and delicious homemade cakes. LOCAL HISTORY GROUP: Ninfield Local History Group will have a meeting and their AGM plus a quiz on Thursday April 21 at 7.30pm. £1 for members, £3 for non-members and light refreshments will be included. Call Rod Ffoulkes on 893635 for all details.

METHODIST CHURCH: On Wednesday from 5pm to 7pm Messy Active Teens with the theme of Outdoor Games. All youngsters are welcome to go along and enjoy this fun early evening event. Methodist Church Service: Sunday, 10.30am Service of Worship and Communion with Revd. John Hope.

PARISH CHURCH: Combined Parish Eucharist Service at St Oswalds, Hooe 10.30am.
