ST GEORGE'S DAY: '˜Cry God for Harry, England and Saint George' Henry V, Act 3, 1598, written by William Shakespeare, born April 23, 1564 died April 23, 1616. 400 years ago tomorrow, Saturday, St George's Day. The next few lines will contain some odd facts and trivia about the two commemorations, things that might interest you, like an anagram of William Shakespeare is I am a weakish speller. Or, Saint George died in the year 303 AD and is not only England's patron saint, but also that of Egypt, Lithuania, Romania and Portugal. William Shakespeare's line '˜Once more unto the breach dear friend, once more' comes from the speech titled at the top and means '˜let's have another go, love' and last, but not least, one tenth of all the everyday quotes and phrases used in the English Language are derived from Shakespeare's plays and sonnets. So, '˜I wait with bated breath, after the winter of our discontent and having given a pound of flesh, to see that all that glitters is a tower of strength...so, wearing my heart on my sleeve' and a Red Rose in my button hole, all I desire is Toad in the Hole with Sherry Trifle for pudding. Now I give in; my brain still hurts from the fantastic quiz on Saturday at the hall, we had a marvellous time, and although we didn't top the leader board, we did win the Picture round. BLUEBELL WALK: Ninfield Bonfire Society are inviting everyone to join them for a Bluebell Walk on Sunday. The venue is Little Park Farm, Hooe Road and the walk will be from midday to 4pm. There will be a nominal charge of £1 for adults, but all children go free, and there will be refreshments on the way. Carol Holland has said that dogs are very welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times, and please be aware that it will be uneven ground especially after all the recent rain. While the adults admire the beautiful display of bluebells this year, the youngsters will have lots to do within the woods, with den-building and hunting on the agenda. There is ample parking at the venue, and any more information can be obtained from Carol on 893326. This is a new event from the Bonfire Society, and they are hoping it will be popular, and as usual, all funds raised through the day will be put towards the fantastic annual Bonfire and Firework Night in October.

CATSFIELD: I’ve had a lovely message from Mike Cooper, the chairman of Catsfield Village Hall, who, knowing that we all like to support our neighbours cross border, has given me the details of a brilliant show that will be performed for one night only on Thursday, 7.30pm at the village hall. It’s Bowjangles and is presented in association with Applause Rural Touring. Bowjangles are a string quartet who can really play. Tickets for this fantastic evening are on sale in the Village Stores, Catsfield; £10 each, concessions £7 or you can phone 01424 893498, email [email protected]. The Village Hall has free parking, is wheelchair accessible and has a licensed bar. It also has a good lighting and sound system, and a lovely atmosphere, so do go and have a fun evening.

METHODIST CHURCH: Ninfield Methodist Church invites families and young people to their next Messy Church on Wednesday, 3.30pm to 5.30pm. The theme this month will be ‘Lost and Found’ and the programme for children aged 4-11years will include all sorts of creative activities. There will also be a celebration and a meal for the children and their parents together. Each family must be accompanied by a parent or carer. Two days later, on Friday April 29, at 2.15pm to 3.45pm, the Methodist Church will launch a new group called Friendship Friday, for meeting friends and enjoying a game of Scrabble, draughts, jigsaws etc (or you can bring along your favourite game). Everyone is very welcome.

PRAM AND KART RACES: The annual Pram Races, held by the Carnival Association, will take place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 2. The fun starts at 11am, with the first race at approximately 11.45am. There will be a barbecue, a tote for all your betting requirements, tuck shop, raffle, and the Blacksmiths Inn will be open all day, before it undergoes a complete redecoration. Races will be for Juniors 10yrs and under, Seniors 11 to 17yrs and don’t forget the prize money for this race is now £50 for the winners, £25 second and £10 third. A Walking race, the fun/mixed race for adults and children together, and then the SID Speed challenge, where competitors can race against the Speed Identification Device; last year the top speed was 14mph. There will be cash prizes for the best homemade kart and the best fancy dress and all winners will also receive trophies and certificates. During the proceedings, the Carnival Court for 2016 will be crowned, and the event is sponsored by Ninfield Parish Council. All funds raised will go towards the re-launch of the Carnival and to local village projects. Time to get those karts made and costumes organised, it’s ten days to go and there’s money to be won.
