Ninfield and Hooe

WHAT A GREAT FEW DAYS: A beautiful St Georges' Day Wedding, congratulations S and D. Preceded by Ninfield's celebrations marking HM Queen's 90th Birthday with the Beacon, Union Jack and Electric Anthems, many thanks to Pete, Carol, Robin, Mat, Phil and Julia and everyone else who put the event on, and to Jonathan Cheese for supplying the Westminster Chimes, along with Happy Birthday and the National Anthem, all on electric guitar. Brian May, eat your heart out. It was great to see so many people there, braving the cold, enjoying sausages in buns and a catch up. Also, thanks to the bonfire society, we had a Beacon that actually caught light. The next part of the Queen's celebrations was discussed by the small group of Ninfield's society representatives on Monday, and a fantastic selection of events and displays has been finalised for the weekend on June 11 and 12. There really will be something for everyone to enjoy, so look out for the lists that will soon appear on notice boards and in shops and halls in the village. Donations of time, help and cakes will be very much appreciated so please call either Carol Holland on 893326, or me on the usual numbers. SNOW: It's nearly the end of April and at time of writing, there is a heavy sleet and hail shower pounding the, thankfully, just mowed lawn. Apparently snow is forecast for early May.

THE PRAM RACE: Bank Holiday Monday, please, no snow, it’s the annual Pram and Kart Races, presented by the Carnival Association and sponsored by Ninfield Parish Council. These will take place all along Manchester Road starting from 11am, first race 11.45am, with the last race at approximately 1.15pm. There will be a barbecue in the Blacksmiths car park, a tote betting stand, a raffle and, just before the prize giving, the Carnival Court for 2016 will be crowned. The fantastic news is that the Blacksmiths Inn will be open for the day. The new landlord, Jack, and his wife Kelly are very keen to support the event and are supplying kegs of live Harveys and lager, plus a fully dressed bar of other drinks. Jack is looking forward to meeting people and finding out what goes on in Ninfield, he has been in the pub trade for some years and has recently re-invented The Wheel in Burwash. So, pray for good weather, get those homemade karts ready, finish the fancy dress outfits and go along on Monday for some speed challenges, trophy winning and cash splashing. It’s a great family day, and all proceeds from the event will go towards the Carnival and local village projects. See you there.

FLOWER GROUP: Monday May 9, 7.30pm at the Memorial Hall. The flower group will welcome Patricia Bashford and her demonstration entitled, Design Focus. As always, non- members are welcome at a small charge of £4, which includes refreshments. All flowers demonstrated are raffled at the end of the evening, so no waste, just a lovely take home gift and extra funds for the charities. The flower group would also like to thank everyone who attended their Jumble Sale recently. The proceeds amounted to a magnificent £550 and again, all go towards the displays and the charities chosen for the year. If you would like more information regarding any of their events, please call Jennifer on 892878 or email [email protected].

A HEADS UP: Ninfield Parish Council do not have their usual meeting on the first Thursday of the month in May, instead it’s the time for the AGM followed by the Annual Parish Meeting, held in the Memorial Hall on Wednesday May 18. The doors open at 7pm, there will be refreshments including sandwiches and wine and all the societies in the village are invited to give a short presentation on what they do throughout the year. There will be updates on all the ongoing discussions re housing etc, but more importantly, it’s a great opportunity to put names to faces for all the people who are on society event notices, or committees’ lists on notice boards throughout the year. The schools will be represented, as will the churches, sports clubs, Scouts, the young people, and many other village societies, clubs and groups, all of whom will be happy to answer questions and at the same time welcome any more volunteers. If you haven’t been before, it’s a great way to meet people, or if you have new neighbours, bring them along.

METHODIST CHURCH: Sunday, 10.30am is Café Church with breakfast.

PARISH CHURCH: Sunday, St Mary’s Ninfield 9.30am Parish Eucharist then 11.15am St Oswald’s Hooe Family Service.

AND FINALLY: After yet another shocking week of loss it has been said a lot over recent days that this is becoming an awful year. Well, yes, when the people in the news are so well known, and their illnesses or situations are not known to the wide world, just, quite rightly, to their family it is a jolt to suddenly see that people one has been brought up with medialistically have been taken, sometimes far too early, but seemingly out of the blue. Bowie, Rickman, Wogan, Corbett, Wood, Prince, all achieved the highest accolades, all gave 100 percent to their work, and all inspired a generation to be great individuals. They will be much missed.
