Ninfield and Hooe

NINFIELD CARNIVAL: We couldn't have ordered better weather for the re-launch of the Ninfield Carnival; to quote Carol Kirkwood, it was scorchio, and yours truly got a tad burned on the back of the shoulders dressed, as I was, as The Oldest Showgirl in the Village complete with feathers and high heels on grass. I also wore a pedometer for the day, starting at 7am when the set up began until 3am on Sunday morning, after the first bit of the clear down. So 20 hours of walking up and down and around the rec and the end total was 23,568 paces. I think that equates to around 12 miles and with another 7,479 paces on Sunday morning, from 8am until 1.30pm, I would say that's roughly 15 miles of walking altogether. The whole event was just fantastic, from the quiz and disco on the Friday evening all the way through the procession, arena events, to the tractor pull, the tea tent, Pimms tent and bar doing a great cooling down service. Ninfield's Best Baker and the Scouts Boot Fair, both successful, the barbecue had long queues, as did the ice cream van. All the rides were in constant use and coconuts and china were being smashed all day. Dan's train trundled back and forth, always fully loaded, and Natalie entertained the smallest participants with glitter and glue in the Muddy Boots Tent. In the evening the marquee rocked to the sounds of Sarah G and the Other 3, then an early start on Sunday to break everything down. But, the breakfast was superb as usual and beautifully cooked by Kelvin. Thank you to all who helped, joined in and supported the day, from near and far, you are all much appreciated. The Carnival Committee, the best team ever and to my other half, RF who worked like Trojan throughout, retains his inestimable sense of humour and also puts up with me.

QUIZ NIGHT: Ninfield Working Men’s Club Quiz Night tomorrow, Saturday, from 7.30pm. Maggie is looking forward to seeing there and no doubt the competitive streak of all the local quizzers will be polished up and raring to go. Lovely chairman Merlin is really revving the Tin Hut up, so get down to the club on Saturday, make up teams on the night if you haven’t got a full complement, or if you fancy going on your own, you’ll be made very welcome, as always.

BONFIRE SOCIETY: Ninfield Music Festival is on Friday and Saturday, July 29 and 30, in the fields behind Elm Cottage, Marlpits Lane. The gig on the Saturday is sold out and when I spoke to Carol over the weekend, there were only 30 Prom tickets left, so it may be too late but it’s definitely worth an ask, so call Carol on 893326, or go to the village stores in Lower Street, or online at http://www.ninfieldbonfire.co.uk/ and see if you can still get to hear the Eastbourne Concert Band, watch the fireworks, and have a lovely picnic at the best Summer Prom Concert in the south east. There will also be updates on the next events and, of course, the actual Bonfire Night itself, which is Saturday October 22. I gave an early heads up a couple of weeks ago on a leaflet and presentation that have been put together by Vicky Payne, a local and highly qualified vet and animal behaviourist, which gives practical help and advice on how to help your animals deal with the stresses they go through with fireworks, and bonfire events. HOOE PARISH COUNCIL: A lovely email from Sally Durman the parish clerk who has informed me that Hooe welcomed the Powdermill Trust to the Bogs Nature Reserve to do some clearance work in this area of special interest. They will be returning on the evening of Friday July 29 to set a moth trap overnight, in order to survey the different types of Moth that visit the Bogs. They will be opening the traps on Saturday morning at 10am and would be delighted to share the experience with the village residents. BOWLS CLUB: Thanks Carole for this week’s results: On Tuesday July 12, some of the members travelled to Worcester Park, Auriol Bowls Club, on an annual return visit; Ninfield team beat the hosts with an overall score of 67-51, then stayed for a lovely ploughman’s lunch. The Wednesday game against Sidley Martletts was abandoned after three games due to torrential rain but as it was a league match, the points were divided to five points each. Staplecross on Saturday saw another league game and another win at 64-60 equalling six table points. Sunday had extremely fine weather again, but the score was not quite as favourable as they played Hawkhurst at home in another league match, losing 54 to Hawkhurst’s 80, still another two points gained which all helps the end tally. Well done again Team.

PARISH CHURCH: Sunday, St Mary’s Ninfield 9.30am Parish Eucharist then St Oswald’s Hooe 11.15am Parish Eucharist.
