Rodmell and Southease

CHEESE AND WINE: Tomorrow, Saturday, there will be a Cheese and Wine Evening hosted by Jenny and Marcus Brown at Abergavenny House at 7pm. Tickets £10.

LOVELY SURPRISE: It was a lovely surprise to see Martina and Alan Parkes at the Easter Day service. Martina and Alan used to live in Monks House and were actually married by Geoff, in the church, 27 years ago. They are both well-known opera singers who after having their two children moved to Germany. They all love Rodmell but like a lot of people with connections here, just cannot afford to live here as houses are so expensive.

STORM KATE: The storm did her damage along this valley with trees down across the C7 and many people waking up to find havoc in their gardens. We suffered fences down (that had only just been repaired from the last storm) and gave our publican an armful of daffodils that had been broken by the wind, along our bank. At least they would brighten up the pub. I also had them everywhere in our house plus I gave Mike’s carer some, so they were not wasted.

BANK HOLIDAY TIME: I do not like going out at Bank Holiday times or Easter, as there are always crowded roads, traffic jams, irate drivers and it’s just not pleasant. However I did make the effort to go and visit one of my Goddaughters at Wannock. This is usually a lovely journey along the coast, via the beautiful Cuckmere Haven Valley, but on Good Friday the traffic was horrendous and the Cuckmere area was well jammed up with people not giving way on the bridge as they were too impatient to wait. I decided not to come back that way but came back along the A27 which was actually not too bad. I’s so pleased I can drive to places of interest during the week and spend weekends in this lovely area and doing my garden, relaxing in peace, unless of course there are children screaming in the pub garden (usually on a Sunday I’ve noticed and late afternoon into evening). I love to hear children playing and there is no better sound than their laughter, but the screaming I can do without.

CHURCH SERVICE: I hear the Early Communion Service at 6.30am on Itford Hill ran into a few problems this year. To cap it all Geoff had a flat tyre on his car. Better luck next year folks.

MONKS HOUSE: Is now open to the public again for the summer. They have a very good little shop there now in what was the garage. People are asked to use the car park provided, not block up the village street. Monks House is open until October 30, 1pm to 5pm from Wednesday to Sunday. Last entry to the house, 4.45pm. The garden and shop are open until October 30, 12.30pm to 5.30pm from Wednesday to Sunday. Also open Bank Holiday Mondays. It seems a lot of people like to make a day of it, having lunch at the pub (best to book because it fills with walkers), then a meander down the street to visit Monks House. THE NEWS: Is so depressing at the moment. I suppose the best way to get on with life is to think of the kind and good people, who spread love and happiness and don’t want to maim, kill and destroy any beauty around them.
