HAVE YOU NOTICED?: Have readers noticed that batteries and light bulbs do not seem to last long these days? I have a large box of light bulbs, as our house has all sorts of lights, and I always seem to be replacing them, despite having all the electrics done in the not too distant past. Light bulbs, I’m sure, lasted a long time in my younger days.

AGE: I read a saying by Julian Clary recently: Anyone can get old. You just have to live long enough. But, as any (older) fool knows, the important thing about life is not what you look like but how you feel. A friend always says, @I sit down as a 20 year old but I get up as a 60 plus’. I know that feeling.

CINEMA: For anyone that wants to come out of the cinema feeling elated, may I suggest you go to see the film Eddie the Eagle. A friend took me to see it at Uckfield Cinema and we came out feeling so happy and thoroughly enjoyed it.

CYCLISTS: In reply to the very reasonable letter from Mr David Rix, Hon Secretary East Sussex Cyclists Touring Club. I agree that cyclists do have and should have the same rights as car drivers on our roads, but from comments made to me since (not all printable) most car drivers feel they pay highly for the privilege of using our roads, whilst cyclists do not. Perhaps a small charge towards road use would placate them. In the meantime I would like to praise and thank all the people who put lots of time into making the roads safer for cyclists and all the cyclists who show these people their appreciation by using the cycle ways and paths. Maybe the people who won’t open their land to cycle paths think it’s not going to be worthwhile if people won’t use them.

PARISH COUNCIL: Rodmell parish Council hold their Annual Parish Assembly on Friday April 22, at 7.30pm in Rodmell Village Hall.

CYCLE PATH: I see there is a comment on the Ouse Cyclepath in the latest newsletter stating: ‘Progress is slow. The section from Southease to just short of Piddinghoe is now complete, but Rodmll and Southease is still not hard surfaced and, frustratingly, permission for the Iford and Rodmell section has been denied by the landowner’.

ACCIDENT: My heart goes out to the owners of the horse that died after being hit by a car on the A26. Evidently a gate on a path was propped open by walkers and several horses let themselves out. Maybe it wasn’t walkers, others use these paths, who knows. Let’s hope people will learn to be more thoughtful and it won’t happen again.

ACCOMMODATION: If you are contemplating walking or cycling the South Downs Way, may I suggest you book accommodation now. I have had to turn so many people down because I am getting full up as are many of the B&B’s along the way.

SURVEY: By the way, would Rodmellians please fill in the good Neighbour Scheme Residents’ Survey and return it to Judith Bradbury. It’s on the back of your newsletter and would be very helpful to Judith.
